A Novel Idea - A Trip To Italy In Poetry and Prose

Who wouldn't love an escape to Italy right now? While an overseas trip might not be in the cards, some of Philadelphia's finest writers are ready to transport you there—no passport required.

Hosted by Julianna Forlano of the Italian American Writers Association (IAWA.net) and set in the heart of Philadelphia's former Italian district, this special evening celebrates Italian heritage, storytelling, and community. A diverse lineup of local writers will share poetry, prose, and memoirs that capture the beauty, struggles, and enduring influence of Italy on generations of Italian Americans.

With humor, heart, and a touch of nostalgia, these writers will bring Italy to life through personal and historical narratives, evoking its sights, sounds, and flavors without ever leaving the city. Whether you're a lover of literature, a seeker of cultural connection, or simply in need of an escape, this promises to be an unforgettable night of storytelling, camaraderie, and Italian flair.

Join us and let the journey begin—no bags, no tickets, just words that transport.

What is Improv?

Improv is acting without a script! In improv jams, we use associations to play games, and make scenes as we go along in an environment welcoming to all! The rules of improv are to always say "yes, and..."

Improv is all about being in the moment and telling a story, and trusting your gut and the people around you.

Light the Ave - Super Bowl Block Pool

  • The Capri Dessecker Team at RE/MAX (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Support the Ave and win BIG with the Birds this Super Bowl LIX! The Capri Dessecker Team at RE/MAX is hosting a Super Bowl Block Pool to benefit the EPABID’s beautification projects for East Passyunk Avenue, including lighting, landscaping and more.

What’s a block pool?

A block pool is a betting game where participants purchase squares on a grid, and winners are determined by the last digit of each team's score at the end of each quarter in the game.

How does it work?

  • Setup: A Super Bowl block pool grid has 100 squares, each corresponding to a unique combination of the last digit of each team's score. Players select squares by buying them for $50 each. Once all 100 blocks are filled, numbers are assigned and players will be notified of their block numbers.

  • Prize Distribution: After the game, winners are determined by the score at the end of each quarter, with one square winning per quarter based on the last digit of both teams' scores.

  • Winnings: Each quarter's winner typically receives a portion of the total pool—$500 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter, and $1,000 for the winner of the final score.

Here’s how to play:
1. Venmo @Capri-Dessecker $50 per square. Put “Super Bowl” in the description. Players must choose blocks before the game begins.
2. Click the Run the Pool link to set up your account and choose your block.
3. Pick your squares and win big!
